SPECIALTIES / ADDICTION & SUBSTANCE USE THERAPY

Addiction & Substance Use Therapy

Compassionate support.

Real understanding. Lasting change.

Addiction and substance use can affect your mental health, relationships, self-esteem, work, and sense of control. You may feel stuck in patterns that are difficult to change, even when part of you wants something different.

At Harmony Healing Psychotherapy, we provide compassionate, evidence-based addiction and substance use therapy for adults across Ontario. Therapy can help you understand the emotional and behavioural patterns connected to substance use, develop healthier coping strategies, address underlying trauma, and move toward a life that feels more stable, meaningful, and fulfilling.

Addiction Is More Than Using a Substance.

Addiction can affect your thoughts, emotions, relationships, physical health, and ability to manage daily life. It may become a way of coping with trauma, stress, loneliness, emotional pain, or difficult experiences that feel overwhelming.

Addiction therapy can help you understand the patterns and underlying needs connected to substance use, reduce shame, and develop healthier ways of coping. With compassionate, non-judgmental support, recovery can become a process of rebuilding stability, connection, and a stronger sense of control.

How Addiction and Substance Use Can Show Up

Using substances to cope with stress, trauma, or difficult emotions

Conflict in relationships, work, school, or daily responsibilities

Feeling unable to cut back or stop despite wanting to

Feelings of shame, guilt, hopelessness, or loss of control

Increased tolerance or needing more to feel the same effect

Neglecting routines, health, interests, or important goals

Withdrawal symptoms, cravings, or strong urges to use

Using more often or for longer than intended

Hiding or minimizing substance use

Returning to substance use during periods of emotional distress

You do not need to experience every sign for addiction therapy to help. With compassionate, evidence-based support, it is possible to understand these patterns, strengthen healthier coping skills, and move toward lasting recovery.

Types of Addiction and Substance Use We Help With

Alcohol Use

Support for alcohol misuse, binge drinking, difficulty cutting back, cravings, relapse patterns, or using alcohol to manage stress, anxiety, trauma, or difficult emotions.

Drug and Substance Use

Therapy for problematic use of cannabis, cocaine, opioids, stimulants, prescription medications, and other substances that may be affecting your health, relationships, responsibilities, or sense of control.

Behavioural Addictions

Support for compulsive behaviours such as gambling, gaming, shopping, internet use, or other patterns that provide temporary relief but create distress or disruption over time.

Concurrent Mental Health and Addiction Concerns

Treatment for substance use occurring alongside anxiety, depression, trauma, BPD, ADHD, emotional dysregulation, or other mental health challenges. Therapy addresses both the addictive pattern and the underlying factors contributing to it.

Our Addiction Therapy Approaches

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, helps you identify the thoughts, triggers, and behaviours that contribute to substance use. CBT can support craving management, relapse prevention, healthier coping strategies, and more balanced decision-making.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, or DBT, teaches practical skills for emotional regulation, distress tolerance, mindfulness, and healthier relationships. It can be especially helpful when substance use is connected to intense emotions, impulsivity, trauma, or difficulty coping with stress.

Internal Family Systems, or IFS therapy, helps you understand the protective parts of yourself that may turn to substances or compulsive behaviours to manage fear, shame, loneliness, or emotional pain. IFS can reduce inner conflict and support greater self-compassion.

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, or ACT, helps you respond to cravings, uncomfortable emotions, and difficult thoughts with greater flexibility. ACT supports choices that align with your values, recovery goals, and long-term well-being.

Attachment-based therapy explores how early relationships and experiences of safety may influence substance use, trust, self-worth, and current relationship patterns. It can help you understand unmet emotional needs and build healthier connections.

Emotion-Focused Therapy, or EFT, helps you identify and process the emotions that may be driving substance use or compulsive behaviours, including shame, grief, anger, loneliness, fear, and emotional pain. By understanding these underlying needs, EFT can support healthier coping, greater self-awareness, and more lasting change in recovery.

Motivational Interviewing for Addiction

Motivational Interviewing helps you explore mixed feelings about change without pressure or judgment. This collaborative approach can strengthen motivation, clarify your goals, and support realistic steps toward recovery.
