EMDR Therapy
Heal from the past.
Feel more present.
EMDR, or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing, is an evidence-based therapy that helps the brain process distressing memories and reduce the emotional intensity connected to traumatic experiences.
At Harmony Healing Psychotherapy, we provide online EMDR therapy for adults across Ontario and Nova Scotia. EMDR can support healing from trauma, PTSD, anxiety, painful memories, shame, and experiences that continue to affect how you feel, think, and respond in everyday life.
Treatment is personalized to your needs and paced with care, helping you feel safer, more grounded, and more in control.
Your past is part of your story.
Healing is how you move
forward.
Trauma can affect how you see yourself, connect with others, and respond to the world around you. While you cannot change what happened, you can change the way those experiences continue to impact your life.
Through trauma-informed therapy, you can build greater awareness of your responses, strengthen emotional regulation, and move from simply coping toward feeling safer, more grounded, and more connected.
How Trauma Can Show Up
Feeling constantly on edge or easily startled
Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive memories
Overthinking, perfectionism, or people-pleasing
Difficulty setting boundaries or feeling safe
Difficulty trusting others or maintaining relationships
Avoiding certain people, places, or situations
Emotional numbness or feeling disconnected
Trouble relaxing, sleeping, or concentrating
Anxiety, panic, or persistent worry
Shame, guilt, or harsh self-criticism
You don't have to experience every symptom for trauma therapy to help. If your past continues to affect your present, healing is possible.

What EMDR Therapy Looks Like
EMDR is a structured therapy process that moves at a pace that feels manageable. You are not expected to immediately revisit difficult memories. Treatment begins with building safety, understanding your goals, and preparing you with tools to manage emotional distress.
1. Understanding Your History & Goals
We begin by exploring what is bringing you to therapy, the experiences that continue to affect you, and what you would like to feel different in your life.
2. Building Safety & Coping Skills
Before trauma processing begins, we focus on grounding, emotional regulation, and coping strategies so you have tools to manage difficult emotions both in and outside of sessions.
3. Identifying What to Work On
Together, we identify specific memories, triggers, emotions, physical sensations, or negative beliefs that may be contributing to current distress.
4. EMDR Processing
During EMDR processing, bilateral stimulation—often guided eye movements—is used while you briefly focus on aspects of the distressing memory. This helps the brain begin processing the experience in a new way.
5. Strengthening Healthier Beliefs
As the emotional intensity of a memory decreases, we work on strengthening more adaptive beliefs such as feeling safer, more capable, or less responsible for what happened.
6. Checking in With Your Body
Trauma can be stored as physical tension or sensations as well as thoughts and emotions. We pay attention to what is happening in your body and work toward reducing any remaining distress.
7. Closing Each Session Safely
Sessions end with grounding and stabilization so you feel supported before returning to your day.
8. Reviewing Progress
At the beginning of future sessions, we check how the memory feels now, what has shifted, and whether additional processing or a new target would be helpful.
